The cambelt synchronises the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft so that the engine valves open and close at the right times. If a cambelt is not changed when it is due to be, it can snap and depending on the type of engine that you have, very expensive, serious damage can occur. A good rule of thumb is to have your cambelt changed after every 40,000 to 60,000 miles of driving or about every 5 years.
